Non-learning
In
the article “I Won’t Learn from You”, the author, Herbert Kohl, states that
non-learning is a huge common thing in our modern life because of some personal
reason or education system. One of the best ways to make a person to start
learning something is to let them know how important of education, and
knowledge. It also about how to learn is one of the most important things can
help our generation improves our education system. Nowadays, instructors are
more likely to force students to learn only the knowledge, also the experiences
of past generations. However, teaching a person how to think about something,
and be creative are also very significant. The author makes a picture about why
people do not want to learn by giving some evident and example that according
to his own experiences.
In
the beginning of article, Kohl supports his idea by giving us a story about his
student’s grandfather who cannot speak English and does not want to learn. He
complain about his child does not know who they were because they do not want
learn Spanish. Then, the author gets a conclusion that prevent learning is bigger
challenge than how to learn, and this story made Kohl thinks back about him
when he was a child. In his memory, the reasons why he does not want learn
Yiddish and Hebrew because of family and his environment. Not only the
student’s grandfather and Kohl are victims of non-learning, but also a lot
people have same problem.
For an example that author’s student whose name is Barry. He was hold back because of his teacher. In additional, Rick is another student that does not want to learn. He can do algebra really quick but he it have the differences between ability and habit. The last two examples are about Akmir who also is a victim of non-learning problem. In another hand, non-learning has some advantage with the racism, sexism, etc.

Primary,
the article is not only about Herbert Kohl’s problem, it is also about our
education system. In my opinion, the education, which we are having, are
struggling with teach student about independent thinking. We are having too
much things force us to learn or do something that are nightmare with us. For
instance, the student’s grandfather in the beginning of article, he compel his
child to learn his language and avoid to study English. Sometime the reasons lead us to non-learning
are from culture or family which usually support to us but now these are in the
other hand. More importantly, our system are indirect teaching us that we
should follow the what other people do and have to keep the same thought with
the old generation instead of teaching us have an independent thinking. It also
was examined as a student’s grandfather in article, the student was force to
learn Spanish because his grandfather wants him have thinking with him about
family and culture reasonability. The author also is a victim of this education
system. He got a lot of trouble when he was in school such as communicate with
other people or do the test. If he got an education which teach him have own
though, he can learn Yiddish and Hebrew whenever his mother cannot. In
additional, our system is running for only improve the ability. Rick’s story is
an example. He can do math really quick but he does not like it and he was
forced to study it. In my opinion, these things just make him more hate math
and will not chose the major or job which about math; consequently, we will
lose a genius in math. Teacher should give him more orientation that give him
more ideas such as using algebra to solve in the science; then, he will not have negative though about
algebra. We need orientate more for student by giving them the ideas about what
people can do with it and make them understand why it is so important to our
life so they can know what fit their habit and ability. The education system
should give student more opportunity instead of choice on them or put them into
someone’s goal. Students need to have enough understanding to make their own
choices with the teacher and parent’s help. Last, I believe that the education should
be extending to social instead of only in school. One of main reason why is
about racism that author mention in the article. People were lead to have the
same thinking but unluckily, that was a bad thinking. Therefore, they need to
be taught how to have nice action that make a good effect to other by try to
see the other aspect of problems. Then, they can decide the best choice for
them and their social.
Second,
the author Kohl impresses me by giving the example to explain why we are
becoming not-learning from his experiences which are the lessons for us. The
author come up with his story which I think is problems with education. In
contrast, we should change ourselves to conscious effort. In my memorizes, I
have done not-learning in the past. It is my story about not-learning and how I
solve it. I remember when I was in grade 5th or 6th, I
took the literature class that is called main subject. I had a thought that
this subject just likes an entertainment class; however, I was wrong. The
literature was not fun as my thought. I have learned about some article that
was written for few decades. I am saying these articles are boring because it
talks about the life at that time they were made. It is already out of date.
However, the teachers made up the article become something grandiose story with
the deep meaning which I cannot understand. Then I decided not to learn all of
these because I though it is like a lie to students when they change the story.
I kept a question for myself that is why I have to keep these in my head when
they are not the main things the author wants to say. I also have other reason
for not to learn that is I think it will be useless in the future. I could not
find any reasons to make myself want to study this subject. I was not get any
forces from parents like my friends so I quitted it from the beginning.
However, it was not meant I can avoid the punishment from the teachers.. The
non-learning not only happens when I was in secondary school but also happen in
college. This is my second time I take the English 101 class. The last class is
one example of non-learning. In many occasions, I did not get any interested in
the way that the teacher used to teach me. I could only stay about three weeks.
It was a challenge time to me. I can grantee that his presentation was not good
enough because he got a lot of question about the lesson after class. I spent
twenty minutes to wait my turn to ask him about what is the homework for that
day. I decided to not to learn this class; then I put it into pass non-credit
and I know I it will show as fail in my transcript. I chose it because I do not
want to waste my time on something I do not understand and get no support from
the teacher. In addition, the non-learning, in my experience, is also in the
math class in last few quarters. I have ability to do solve math problems like
Rich in the article but when I took math class, I got taught and force to do by
the way that teacher gave me. These are all new way to do but I could do it in
my way which is faster than these. I made decision that not to learn about it
but I still keep it in good score which is enough to pass this class. I do not
know why the teacher was not accepting my way even it better than hers. After all
these experiences, I do agree with Kohl that people chose what they learn
whenever they are gotten force or get any worst punishment. They still keep it
in mind set that not to learn what they do not want
In
the conclusion, the education today is like an out of date machine that lead
people to not-learning. According to Kohl, the author of “I won’t learn from
you” pressed my agreement with his idea by adding up the examples about him,
his students and his friends. It is a huge and common thing when we go to
school but never talk about. Herbert Kohl reminds us the reason
why we study and our desire that each student can make the world difference in
someday.
